At the heart of the Cardamom Hills lies Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected repository of several endangered, rare and endemic species of flora and fauna. Known largely to be a home to tigers, elephants and the Nilgiri Tahr, it is a pristine and thickly wooded areas of tropical rolling hills. Elephants and other species are often seen watering and bathing themselves at the banks of River Periyar. Select areas of the Periyar Lake are open to tourists and visitors for boating and wildlife watching.
With hundreds of species of flora and fauna, many of them rare, the site is a very important part of Kerala. Periyar at Summit Hampton Hotel & Spa pays homage to its historic sanctuary that was first declared as protected in 1899 by the Maharaja of Travancore.
